Cub Scout Pack 219

2018 Pack 219 Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby is one of the highlights of the pack year. Each Scout is provided with a pinewood derby car kit provided by the pack. With the help of a responsible adult the Scout designs, customizes and paints his car.

Please note: While the car is supposed to be made by the Scout we strongly recommend that the use of any power tools in creating the car be performed by an adult or at the very least under the close supervision of an adult.  The pack generally provides for one or two days where the Scout can receive help in cutting out their car. Aside from power tools please allow your Scout to do as much of the fabrication as possible.

The rules for the Pinewood Derby can be found here. Please review them carefully before you begin to design your car. Any car not meeting the specifications set forth in the rules may not be allowed to race. The final decision on whether a car can race or not rests with the judges - please respect their decision.

Design Tips

At a loss for a car design? If you google Pinewood Derby car designs you will return a wealth of suggestions.  We also have some basic patterns here that you can choose from.

Recently a number of pre-made car kits have come on the market. Scouts should not be using these pre-made kits. Part of the point of the Pinewood Derby is to give a Scout the opportunity to build a car and then race it. Please use only the kits supplied by the pack!

Lets talk weight: Our experience suggests that cars run best at right around the 5 ounce maximum limit. After cutting your car it will be substantially underweight. There are many choices for adding weight - stick on weights, screw on weights, cylinders, etc.  Please arrive at the trial run with you car at final weight.  We will have a few weights available for a final tweaking but the car needs to be close prior to arriving at the trial run.

So how do I make my car go faster? Weight, make sure the axles and wheels are straight and use dry powdered graphite to lubricate the axles.  Trust me... Graphite makes all the difference!

Trophies will be handed out!

1st, 2nd, 3rd place for Speed

1st, 2nd, 3rd place for Most Original

1st, 2nd, 3rd place for Best Crafted
